SXSW Internships

South by Southwest offers a broad range of internships. Our focus is to provide a real-life learning experience within the organization, so that students are better prepared to seek employment after graduation.

To apply for an internship, submit your resume and cover letter to the SXSW Internship Department, intern@sxsw.com. Please include in your cover letter “Why you think an internship with SXSW would benefit you.” Also, designate up to (3) internship(s) you wish to apply for (from greatest interest to least). Include your choices in both your cover letter and the body of the e-mail. Don’t forget to include any additional information requested in the internship descriptions. All positions are unpaid and you must be a currently enrolled college student. Preference will be given to students receiving college credit for their internship. Most positions require a weekly time commitment and more than full-time availability during SXSWeek, and the days immediately preceding the start of the event.

Internships That Are Currently Available:

Accelerator Internship/Online Researcher (Remote Internship)

Description:

We are seeking a part-time online researcher who can pull together various sources of information related to, but not limited to, startups and the VC/Angel technology investor industry. The researcher must also be able to source all work found and incorporate the information into a comprehensive document for the event producer.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Able to demonstrate online research skills

Availability:
This position runs September thru March and applicants should be available 5-7 hours a week. All work will be done remotely.

Interactive Awards Coordination Internship

Description:

The SXSW Interactive Festival is looking for a highly motivated and dedicated individual who is interested in learning about awards coordination, event logistics, organization and planning. This position will be mainly project-based with various day-to-day tasks. Some projects may include: outreach/promotion for awards entries, communicating with awards entrants, judges, and finalists, facilitating the entry evaluation process, scheduling and logistics, planning and facilitating awards events, collecting and compiling multimedia deliverables, etc. During SXSW in March, this individual will work on-site and assist with Interactive Innovation Awards and Gaming Awards Ceremony production, talent, finalists, and attendees.

Availability:
This position runs from September through March and requires 12-20 hours of work per week, with a minimum of 2 days onsite in the SXSW office in downtown Austin. Full-time plus availability during SXSW Interactive and SXSW Gaming 2016, March 11 - 20, is required.

Interactive Content Internship

Description:

Reporting to the Interactive Content Producer, the Interactive Content Intern’s primary duty will be to help strategize, execute and maintain web content. This includes maintaining static pages using Drupal, help to schedule day-to-day blog posts and social media pre-event as well as during the event. They will also assist in editing and help write blogs as needed. This position also requires tracking analytics for all sites using Google Analytics.

  • Familiarity with major social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, Instagram, etc.
  • Understanding of HTML/Markdown

Availability:
This position runs from October 2015 through April 2016 and requires 10-20 hours of work per week, and full-time fromMarch 10-20 is required. There will be longer hours leading up to the event, including at least two Saturdays.

Interactive Programming & Production Internship

Description:

The SXSW Interactive Festival is seeking an individual who is enthusiastic about learning more about the pre-event planning of session programming at a leading technology event. This will be a broad, hands-on introduction to the basics of internal operations. This person will interface will speakers both pre-event and onsite so good communication skills are a must. This person will do outreach on behalf of the Interactive Festival, and the position is very much project oriented. This position will also be specifically involved in onsite oversight of the SXSW Interactive Mentor Program.

Requirements for this position include:

  • An exceptional work ethic, professionalism and a positive attitude
  • Good communication skills and email etiquette. There will be a lot of emailing.
  • Working knowledge of Gmail, Google Calendar / Docs and Mac computers

This position runs from September through March and requires 10-15 hours of work per week, with a minimum of 2 days onsite in the SXSW office in downtown Austin. Full-time plus availability during SXSW Interactive 2016, March 11 - 15, is required.

Music Content Internship

Description:

Assist with digital and print content efforts for the SXSW Music Conference & Festival. The intern’s primary responsibility will be writing announcement and editorial blog text, especially during the heavy announcement season (January-March). Candidate should be able to quickly and competently turnaround blog copy on extremely short notice. Strong writing skills – especially in terms of voice, punctuation and grammar – are a must!

Duties for this position include:

  • Writing blog copy for SXSW Music blog feeds
  • Drafting social media copy
  • Combing social media for real-time trends and discussions pertinent to SXSW Music
  • Gathering and resizing photos for SXSW.com and social media
  • Assist with planning, organizing and executing SXSW Music 2016 editorial content (Four on the Floor, Conference Spotlight, Deep Tracks blog series)
  • Assist with proofing SXSW Music 2016 print materials
  • Occasionally contact artist and speaker representatives to source photos, inform them of editorial coverage on website

Requirements for this position include:

  • Strong writing skills – includes use of voice, punctuation, grammar (writing samples required)
  • Very important for candidate to have strong enthusiasm for and knowledge of music and music industry issues

Music Festival Internship

The SXSW Music Festival Department is seeking several interns to assist the booking staff with day-to-day operations, artist advancement and data entry. Additional assistance with music-related projects may be required. These positions will provide hands-on experience in the production of a large scale music festival.

Requirements for this position include:

  • A love of music and an open mind to different genres
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Experience using FileMaker Pro
  • Interest in event planning and logistics
  • Excellent communications skills (phone, email and conversation)
  • Great organizational skills
  • Fluency in foreign language(s) a plus, though not required

This position runs October 2015 - Late March 2016. A time commitment of 10-20 hours a week with full-time availability during SXSW, March 11-20, is required.

Production Volunteer Coordinator Internship

Description:

The Volunteer Department is seeking an intern to assist with the coordination of volunteer production crews as well as other volunteer-related duties. The intern will be responsible for working with the SXSW Volunteer database to schedule, manage and communicate with volunteers on a regular basis. In addition, the individual may be tasked with project-based work and physical duties such as assisting with the setup of operations and helping to coordinate large groups of volunteers with little supervision. This internship will provide a first-hand experience of the planning and logistics of a large-scale conference and festival.

Requirements for this position include:

Pro Media Production Internship (Fall Internship)

Description:

Pro Media Production Internship (Spring Internship)

Description:

SXSWedu Community Development Internship

Description:

SXSWedu is seeking a community development intern. This individual will work closely with the SXSWedu team to develop a strategic plan for community outreach and brand build. This position is ideal for motivated individuals seeking to strengthen communication, organizational and strategic planning skills. Professional and charismatic self-starters will thrive in this environment. Previous experience in education, event planning, community outreach or Spanish communication is a plus.

SXSWedu Marketing Internship

Description:

SXSWedu is seeking a marketing and press intern. This individual will work closely with the communications team to develop and execute various marketing campaigns (both print and digital), support media and press initiatives and contribute on related daily tasks. This position is ideal for experienced individuals who are looking to learn and be challenged by a highly creative work setting. Motivated, self-starters will thrive in this environment. Previous experience in education, marketing, PR or event planning is a plus.
