SXSW Internships

All positions are unpaid and you must be a current student. Most positions require a weekly time commitment and more than full-time availability during SXSWeek, and the days immediately prior to the start of the event. All internships require in office attendance unless otherwise specified in the internship description.

Accelerator Online Researcher Internship

Description:

SXSW Accelerator is seeking a part-time online researcher who can pull together various sources of information related, but not limited to, startups and the VC/Angel technology investor industry. The researcher must also be able to source all work found and incorporate the information into a comprehensive document for event producer.

Requirements for this position include:

Availability:
This position begins when filled. A 5 to 7 hour a week commitment is required, and full-time availability during SXSWeek, March 12-21. All pre-event work will be done remotely.

Film Conference Internship

Description:

The Film department at SXSW is seeking an individual who is eager to learn more about pre-event planning at a Film Festival conference. This will be a broad, hands-on introduction to the basics of internal operations. This person will interface with Film Conference Speakers so great communication skills are a must.

Availability:
This position runs from December through March, requires 12-20 hours of work per week and a minimum of 3 days onsite in the SXSW office in downtown Austin. Full-time plus availability during SXSW Film 2015 (March 13-21) is required.

Film Production Internship (3 positions)

Description:

The SXSW Film Department is seeking individuals who are eager to do production work at and leading up to the film festival. An individual seeking this position should have an interest in event production and a willingness to work hard.

  • Able to lift 50+ lbs

Availability:
One position (focusing on submissions) will run from September through March and requires 12-20 hours of work per week. 2 positions (focusing on event production) will run from January through April and requires 12-20 hours of work per week. All positions must work a minimum of 3 days onsite in the SXSW office in downtown Austin. Full-time plus availability during SXSW Film 2015 (March 13-21) is required.

Film Tech Internship (2 positions)

Description:

The SXSW Film Tech Department is seeking individuals who are eager to learn the film tech database and different exhibition formats used at the festival. An individual seeking this position should have an interest in film exhibition and a willingness to work hard.

Graphic Design Internship

Description:

The Interactive Festival at SXSW is seeking a design student or an individual with design experience to assist with the creation of conference publications (booklets, programs, mailers, flyers, postcards, etc.) and signage for the SXSW Interactive Festival 2015 Season.

Candidates should have the following:

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Attention to strong detail and design principles including layout, topography and color
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and work independently
  • Exceptional work ethic

Availability:
This position runs through April 2015 (negotiable) and requires 10-20 hours of work per week, with one to two days onsite at the SXSW offices in downtown Austin. Housing Internship (2 Positions)

Description:

The SXSW Housing Department is seeking a few individuals to assist with the processing of over 12,000 hotel reservations at about 70 different hotels for SXSW attendees (registrants, showcasing artists, filmmakers, trade show exhibitors, etc.)

Requirements for this position include:

  • Focus geared toward hospitality and hotel management a bonus
  • Hotel management or other hotel related experience preferred

Interactive Project Management Intern

Description:

The SXSW Interactive Festival is looking for a highly motivated and dedicated individual who is interested in learning about office administration, staff/team logistics and organization, event planning, and project management. This position will be mainly project-based with various day-to-day administration tasks. Some projects may include: assisting with team events, networking events planning, publications project management, speaker and community outreach, scheduling and logistics, etc. During SXSW in March, this individual will work on-site and assist with production, speakers, and attendees.

Legal Internship

Description:

The ideal candidate for this position is a pre-law or law school student. This internship offers the opportunity to work with legal-related matters that are part of the department's daily operations. The intern's main responsibilities include assistance with the tracking and management of contracts and intellectual property issues as well as legal research.

Music Festival Internship

Description:

The SXSW Music Festival Department is seeking several interns to assist the booking staff with day to day operations, artist advancement and data entry. Additional assistance with music related projects may be required. These positions will provide hands on experience in the production of a large scale music festival.

  • A love of music and an open mind to different genres
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Experience using FileMaker Pro
  • Interest in event planning and logistics
  • Excellent communications skills (phone, email and conversation)

Music Festival Internship (Spanish Speaking Required)

Description:

The SXSW Music Department is seeking one intern to assist the booking staff with day to day operations, artist advancement and data entry. Additional assistance with music related projects may be required. This position will provide hands on experience in the production of a large scale music festival.

Planning Event Coordinator Internship

Description:

The SXSW Planning department deals with contracting, organizing, detailing and executing the various SXSW events throughout the year. From managing convention space to developing long-term strategies for growth and sustainability the planning department operates at the center of all things SXSW. The event planning coordinator will assist with contracting, managing activations, transportation and logistics management, and the coordinating of production elements necessary for successful execution of a two-week long event.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Effectively and concisely communicate both in writing and verbally.
  • Knowledge of meeting planning, hotel / venue policy, audio/video production, convention services, and contracting are beneficial.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office Suite is a must and proficiency with other software (Filemaker Pro, Adobe Suite, Keynote, Prezi etc.) is helpful.
  • Detail-oriented individual who can handle task-based assignments as well as general direction to produce planning documents and maintain the high standard of production that has made SXSW a success.

Availability:
A minimum of 15-20 hours per week is required from December through March and full-time during SXSWeek (March 13-22). Applicant must be able to work in our office in downtown Austin at least 3 days a week, and must be able to attend a weekly Tuesday meeting from 11AM – 1PM.

Pro Media Post Production Internship (2 Positions)

Description:Pro Media Post-Production Intern (2 Positions)

Post-production interns are responsible for editing, processing and posting of video assets leading up to the March event. After the March event, tasks may include archiving, editing & posting of content. Ideal candidates possess working knowledge of non-linear editing (Final Cut Pro and/or Adobe Premiere) and transcoding workflows - as well as interest in and enthusiasm for the overall production process. Ideal candidate is organized and self-motivated.

Availability:

Registration Internship

Description:

Want to meet actors, artists and chat with other attendees one one one? Consider an internship with the SXSW Registration Team. All official attendees come through Registration to pick up their credentials. You never know who you'll run into

The Registration Staff is in need of a dedicated individual to assist in the processing and support of registrants prior to and during SXSW. The intern will be responsible for providing credentials to all registrants during SXSW and assisting with registration problems and concerns. Additional duties may be assigned closer to and during the event.

Sales Internship (Programming, Production, Marketing, and Administration

Description:

The sales department is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic intern to help with a variety of production, marketing and admin tasks. These include: researching current trends relevant to Interactive, Film & Music, programming & production for the Trade Show Next Stage and Flatstock Stage, operational assistance across all SXSW exhibitions, assisting with marketing for events programmed by the sales department (eg. exhibitions, parties, meet-ups) and administrative work such as filing and data entry. This position provides the opportunity to learn about marketing outreach, event production, exhibition organization and to improve your written skills.

Software Development Team Internship

Description:

The SXSW Tech Department is seeking an intern to assist in the development, maintenance and support of various software products including SXSW.com, SXSW Cart, SXSocial, SXSchedule, etc. The internship will focus on internal and external technical support, evaluation and testing of software, and general administrative duties.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in a technical field
  • Have general knowledge and high interest in the technical field
  • General troubleshooting, problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Comfortable working and troubleshooting with Mac OS, Linux, and Windows
  • Comfortable working with Microsoft Office and Google Docs
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good organization and documentations skills
  • General web development knowledge

Sponsorship Social Media/Web Content & Client Services Internship

Description:

Assist the Sponsorship Web Content liaison with the composition, scheduling, follow-up and execution of Official SXSW sponsors’ social media requests. Assist in maintaining accurate tracking processes and documents through ongoing coordination with all SXSW departments, vendors and clients as it pertains to their respective social media needs. Assist the Sponsorship team with a variety of business development, client services and administrative tasks.

Duties include:

Update and assist in maintaining tracking documents and processes for sponsors’ social media including but not limited to the following:

  • Coordinating with Web Content dept to maintain sponsor social media scheduling/calendar
  • Composition of sponsor “talking points” into SXSW voice for blog posts
  • Sponsor logo placement and sponsor descriptions on sxsw.com/sponsor page
  • Assist the acting web content manager with direct oversight of web content plan implementation onsite during the 10 days of SXSW
  • Assisting with additional social media scheduling and or web content tasks where need onsite
  • Helping with departmental administrative, research and other tasks as needed

SXSWedu is seeking an individual who is eager to learn more about the pre-event planning and onsite execution of an innovations in learning event. This will be a broad, hands-on introduction to the basics of internal operations at SXSW and event production.

Volunteer Coordinator Internship

Description:

The SXSW Volunteer Department is seeking several Individuals to assist in the coordination of over 3,000 volunteers, as well as other event planning projects. The intern will be responsible for helping volunteers with the signup process, schedules, planning volunteer social events, data entry, phone inquiries, administrative tasks and a multitude of other duties leading up to the event. The volunteer department works closely with all departments within SXSW to ensure proper planning and execution of the volunteer plan. This position will provide a wide spectrum of experience in regards to the production of a large scale event.

Production Volunteer Coordinator Internship

Description:

The Volunteer Department is seeking an intern to assist with the coordination of volunteer production crews as well as other volunteer related duties. The intern will be responsible for working with the SXSW Volunteer database to schedule, manage and communicate with volunteers on a regular basis. In addition, the individual may be tasked with project based work, physical duties such as assisting with the setup of operations and helping to coordinate large groups of volunteers will little supervision. This internship will provide a first-hand experience of the planning and logistics of a large scale conference and festival.
