SXSW Internships

All positions are unpaid and you must be a current student. Most positions require a weekly time commitment and more than full-time availability during SXSWeek, and the days immediately prior to the start of the event. Unless specified as "remote" in the internship description, intern positions require weekly attendance at our offices in downtown Austin.

To apply for an internship, submit your resume and cover letter to the SXSW Intern Coordinator. Include in your cover letter why you think an internship with SXSW would benefit you. Designate up to (3) internship positions you wish to apply for (from greatest interest to least). Include your choices in both your cover letter and the body of the email. Digital Content Internship

Description:

Reporting to the Digital Content Manager, the Digital Content Intern’s primary duty will be to edit, and help maintain all websites and social media channels managed by SXSW, LLC. The intern will build/edit static pages across all Drupal websites, help to schedule day-to-day social media posts, edit blog posts and assist in scheduling all social media that needs to go out pre-event/during event. In addition, the intern will help write articles as needed and track analytics for all sites using Google Analytics.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Image editing experience with tools such as Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator

  • Understanding of HTML/Markdown

Availability:
This position runs from January 19, 2015 to March 27, 2015 with 10-20 hours of work per week and full-time availability from March 9-22 is required. There will be longer hours leading up to the event, including at least two Saturdays.

Exhibitions Internship

Description:

The Sales Department is looking for an intern to support the Exhibitions Floor Manager across SXSW exhibitions, including the main Trade Show and the Music Gear Expo, by assisting with all associated duties before, during, and after SXSW.

Some of the tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Setting the exhibit floors
  • Advising exhibitors on service suppliers
  • Organizing credentials and signage
  • Coordinating event logistics and enforcing show regulations
  • Assisting with load-in and load-out
  • Monitoring visitor traffic and events during the shows
  • Managing volunteers
  • Helping exhibitors onsite and monitoring absences
  • Leading our photographers to capture the shows and individual booths
  • Assisting with collating information for post-event analysis

This position runs from Monday, January 19, 2015 to Friday, March 27, 2015, requires 10-20 hours of work per week, and full-time from March 9-22 is required. There will be longer hours leading up to the event, including at least two Saturdays.

Film Press and Publicity Internship

Description:

The SXSW Film department is seeking one individual who is eager to do press & publicity leading up to and during the film festival. An individual seeking this position should have an enthusiasm for film publicity and a willingness to work hard.

Position will run from January through April and requires 20 hours of work per week. All positions must work a minimum of 3 days onsite in the SXSW office in downtown Austin. Full-time plus availability during SXSW Film 2015 (March 13-21) is required.

Film Production Internship (3 positions)

Description:

The SXSW Film Department is seeking individuals who are eager to do production work at and leading up to the film festival. An individual seeking this position should have an interest in event production and a willingness to work hard.

  • Work well in a team setting

  • Able to lift 50+ lbs
  • Ability to adapt in a fast paced environment
  • Age 21 or over

Availability:
One position (focusing on submissions) will run from September through March and requires 12-20 hours of work per week. 2 positions (focusing on event production) will run from January through April and requires 12-20 hours of work per week. All positions must work a minimum of 3 days onsite in the SXSW office in downtown Austin. Full-time plus availability during SXSW Film 2015 (March 13-21) is required.

Film Tech Internship (2 positions)

Description:

The SXSW Film Tech Department is seeking individuals who are eager to learn the film tech database and different exhibition formats used at the festival. An individual seeking this position should have an interest in film exhibition and a willingness to work hard.

Graphic Design Internship

Description:

SXSW​ ​is seeking a design student or an individual with design experience to assist with the creation of conference marketing materials and publications (booklets, programs, mailers, flyers, postcards, etc.), graphics and signage for the SXSW 2015 Season.

Candidates should have the following:

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Attention to detail
  • Knowledge of design principles including layout, typography and color
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and work independently

Availability:
This position runs October or November 2014 through April 2015 (negotiable) and requires 10-20 hours of work per week, with at least one to two days onsite at the SXSW offices in downtown Austin. Housing Internship (2 Positions)

Description:

The SXSW Housing Department is seeking a few individuals to assist with the processing of over 12,000 hotel reservations at about 70 different hotels for SXSW attendees (registrants, showcasing artists, filmmakers, trade show exhibitors, etc.)

Requirements for this position include:

  • Good communication skills (phone and email)
  • Exceptional customer service
  • Focus geared toward hospitality and hotel management a bonus
  • Hotel management or other hotel related experience preferred

Interactive Programming & Production Intern

Description:

The SXSW Interactive Festival is seeking an individual who is enthusiastic about learning more about the pre-event planning of panels programming at a leading technology event. This will be a broad, hands-on introduction to the basics of internal operations. This person will interface will speakers both pre-event and onsite so good communication skills are a must. This person will do outreach on behalf of the Interactive Festival, and the position is very much project oriented. Additionally, this person will help to both produce and gather content and photos for various print and online materials, from blog posts for the SXSW website to our print program guides. Strong writing and copy editing skills, and some basic HTML knowledge are a plus.

This position runs from September through March and requires 12-20 hours of work per week, with a minimum of 2 days onsite in the SXSW office in downtown Austin. Full-time plus availability during SXSW Interactive 2015, March 13 - 17, is required.

Legal Internship

Description:

The ideal candidate for this position is a pre-law or law school student. This internship offers the opportunity to work with legal-related matters that are part of the department's daily operations. The intern's main responsibilities include assistance with the tracking and management of contracts and intellectual property issues as well as legal research.

Music Festival Internship (Spanish Speaking Required)

Description:

The SXSW Music Department is seeking one intern to assist the booking staff with day to day operations, artist advancement and data entry. Additional assistance with music related projects may be required. This position will provide hands on experience in the production of a large scale music festival.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Fluency in Spanish
  • A love of music and an open mind to different genres
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Experience using FileMaker Pro
  • Interest in event planning and logistics
  • Excellent communications skills (phone, email and conversation)
  • Great organizational skills

This position runs October 8, 2014 - Late March 2015. A time commitment of 10-20 hours a week with full time availability during SXSW, March 13-22, is required.

Production Intern

Description:

The SXSW Production Department is seeking a production intern to assist our team with event production, planning and execution that will include venue walkthroughs, vendor acquisition, production advancement and onsite production coordination. This is a great opportunity to learn the basics of conference and festival production management from inception to execution.

This position runs from December until April and requires 12 to 20 hours of work per week. This position must work a minimum of 3 days a week in the SXSW offices located in downtown Austin. Full time availability during SXSWedu and SXSW Music, Film and Interactive (3/9 to 3/22) is required.

Pro Media Post Production Internship (2 Positions)

Description:Pro Media Post-Production Intern (2 Positions)

Post-production interns are responsible for editing, processing and posting of video assets leading up to the March event. After the March event, tasks may include archiving, editing & posting of content. Ideal candidates possess working knowledge of non-linear editing (Final Cut Pro and/or Adobe Premiere) and transcoding workflows - as well as interest in and enthusiasm for the overall production process. Ideal candidate is organized and self-motivated.

Availability:

Registration Internship

Description:

Want to meet actors, artists and chat with other attendees one one one? Consider an internship with the SXSW Registration Team. All official attendees come through Registration to pick up their credentials. You never know who you'll run into

The Registration Staff is in need of a dedicated individual to assist in the processing and support of registrants prior to and during SXSW. The intern will be responsible for providing credentials to all registrants during SXSW and assisting with registration problems and concerns. Additional duties may be assigned closer to and during the event.

Sales Promotion and Support Internship

Description:

The Sales Department is looking for an intern to assist in developing and executing promotional campaigns and provide support for the SXSWedu Ed Expo and SXSW Job Market. Some of the tasks include but are not limited to: identifying target groups, developing and disseminating promotional materials, executing on legacy marketing initiatives, coordinating with the marketing department on media schedules and deliverables, organizing the exhibit floors, advising exhibitors on service suppliers, coordinating event logistics and regulations, assisting with load-in and load-out, monitoring traffic and events during the shows, managing exhibit volunteers, helping exhibitors onsite, and assisting with collating information for post-event analysis.

Software Development Team Internship

Description:

The SXSW Tech Department is seeking an intern to assist in the development, maintenance and support of various software products including SXSW.com, SXSW Cart, SXSocial, SXSchedule, etc. The internship will focus on internal and external technical support, evaluation and testing of software, and general administrative duties.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in a technical field
  • Have general knowledge and high interest in the technical field
  • General troubleshooting, problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Comfortable working and troubleshooting with Mac OS, Linux, and Windows
  • Comfortable working with Microsoft Office and Google Docs

Sponsorship Social Media/Web Content & Client Services Internship

Description:

Assist the Sponsorship Web Content liaison with the composition, scheduling, follow-up and execution of Official SXSW sponsors’ social media requests. Assist in maintaining accurate tracking processes and documents through ongoing coordination with all SXSW departments, vendors and clients as it pertains to their respective social media needs. Assist the Sponsorship team with a variety of business development, client services and administrative tasks.

Duties include:

Update and assist in maintaining tracking documents and processes for sponsors’ social media including but not limited to the following:

  • Coordinating with Web Content dept to maintain sponsor social media scheduling/calendar
  • Composition of sponsor “talking points” into SXSW voice for blog posts
  • Sponsor logo placement and sponsor descriptions on sxsw.com/sponsor page
  • Acting web content manager onsite during the 10 days of SXSW
  • Assisting with additional social media scheduling and or web content tasks where need onsite
  • Helping with departmental administrative, research and other tasks as needed

SXSWedu is seeking an individual who is eager to learn more about the pre-event planning and onsite execution of an innovations in learning event. This will be a broad, hands-on introduction to the basics of internal operations at SXSW and event production.

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask and work independently
  • An exceptional work ethic, professionalism and a good attitude
  • Good communication skills and phone / email etiquette
  • Excellent writing, research and proofreading skills
  • Working knowledge of Gmail, Google Calendar / Docs and Mac computers

SXSWfm Production Internship

Description:

Seeking an intern to help in the production processes of SXSWfm (sxsw.com/fm), the official online radio channel of SXSW. Responsibilities will include: Recording and producing DJ breaks voiced by the hosts of special weekly shows – Hip Hop, Electronic, Indie Rock, etc., encoding weekly shows for play on our SoundCloud channel, recording and producing interviews with artists and other guests, editing content from the SXSW Conferences into brief, interesting interstitials and helping to create compelling station Imaging.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Ideal candidate will be proficient in using DAW (we use Adobe Audition)
  • Able to work independently and on a deadline
  • Responsible, professional and pleasant to work with

Position runs September 29, 2014 - April 10, 2015 (dates flexible an may be subject to change). 20-hr/week.
